What would happen if Haiti had a space program? What would Haiti look like as a first world nation?
The Show Must Go On
DIMITHRY VICTOR, The Show Must Go On, 2023, Acrylic on canvas, 72 × 60 in
The Show Must Go On is inspired by the pandemic and the many store closures in Little Haiti, Miami. During this time, many Haitian people in the community found solace in one another, even as times grew increasingly difficult. With this painting, I wanted to depict that resilience and sense of community.
Haitians have long been misrepresented in both media and art. While the current political climate is far from ideal, I use my work to envision a version of Haiti I want to see.
My artistic practice is devoted to exploring and amplifying the experiences of marginalized communities, with an emphasis on the unique attributes that shape their identities. I strive to portray Black individuals in ways that are both relatable and empowering, while intentionally avoiding harmful or reductive representations.
Haitians have long been misrepresented in both media and art. While the current political climate is far from ideal, I use my work to envision a version of Haiti I want to see. I aim to create meaningful works that reflect our present social reality, incorporating elements of life such as love, sports, anxiety, and wealth—with a distinctive twist.
Ultimately, my goal is to create art that resonates with the community I grew up in, ensuring it remains accessible and inclusive for all. Art is a powerful form of communication, and I’m driven to use my creativity to reflect that power with intention and care.
